The best Jeep on the list? Say it in the comments section.

Avenger started its career with batteries and engines from Peugeot e-2008 (and e-208). A 48 V hybrid version now completes the range, again using elements from the French car but still with a Jeep touch. However, there is nothing external that distinguishes the electric version from the heat engine input.

More observant observers will still have noticed the exhaust on the rear fender. For the rest, it remains a smaller Jeep, with less attractive styling than its friends on the list. This compact crossover does not betray its origins, however, proudly displaying the historic grille and bars. With its small face, it fits easily into urban environments, without looking like a big ugly SUV.

Interior instead of volume. You can opt out without reading the instructions…

Inside, the Avenger plays humbly, wide-eyed. You can store almost anything and everything in the tall storage space at the base of the dashboard. The climate controls (not dual-zone) are physical. Note the absence of an automatic gearbox selector, which makes room for a large covered storage compartment.

To control the transmission, you must press the “PNRD” button. The fully digital instrument cluster is very readable, especially on the 10.25-inch touchscreen. The ergonomics of the menu is made easy with large icons, and the logic is easy to understand. The system battery (0.89 kWh) is located under the front seat, and therefore does not interfere with the space provided for the rear passengers. We feel comfortable with two, less than three, while the trunk (with double bottom) of 380 l capacity seems a little tight.

This Jeep Avenger mostly relies on electric power at low speeds.

The small Jeep has a 1.2 e-hybrid under the hood optimized to integrate a 48 V system to develop a total of 100 horses (electric motor 28 hp). Starting is always done electrically. We end up no longer noticing when the engine is running or not at low speeds, and especially when decelerating. We still feel the start, but without being misdiagnosed. The car glides smoothly around town.

At street speeds, 100 horsepower is enough for most situations, as long as you’re not trying to play Fangio. Above all, the block exhibits a surprising silence at increased speed. The contribution of electric power is known when overclocking, especially in sports. This power mode also makes the steering more stable, even if it looks worse. Sometimes we complain about the responsiveness of the gearbox, but it is more pleasant than CVTs.

The heroic Avenger knows how to raise his claws!

Consumption remains about 7 liters on our uneven route, without even trying to play the eco-driving game. You can easily lose 1 liter by being more careful, thanks mainly to efficient regeneration. In this category, the Jeep Avenger e-Hybrid drives well, knowing how to be forgotten in the city, without sacrificing comfort for the driver outside of it. With its satisfactory balance, and its good comfort, we believe it is on the pavement.

Only the Avenger wears the Jeep badge. The manufacturer was interested in showing us some of its off-road capabilities, by taking us to a part of the “Jeep” course at the test station. On the program, ups and downs on wet and muddy surfaces. Clearly, the brand hasn’t made things easy for our small front-wheel drive SUV. We are even invited to the bridge crossing exercise.

First of all, with a non-specific exercise ball, motor skills are never affected. Its ground clearance makes life easier in the most technical passages. The deep puddles on the muddy paths of the small forest area of the complex did not scare our Avenger. His secret? Its length and traction are optimized with Sand, Snow or Mud programs. Drop support wins all. And you know what? A 4X4 version is planned.

Summing up

Electricity, gasoline and hybrid current. The Jeep Avenger lineup now has something to entice as many people as possible. As a petrol version, the e-Hybrid makes it easier to access from a price point of view compared to its cell twin. The price range starts at €26,300. Calculate €30,800 for our well-equipped test model. Its impressive ability to get off the beaten track also makes it attractive to mountain climbers and professionals traveling on difficult terrain.
