The ABT CUPRA Team will start for the first time in the Formula E race on next Saturday 14 January in Mexico City, with the selection event that will launch the 9th season.

Pilots Robin Frijns and Nico Müller will make their debut in their Formula E Gen3 – the fastest, lightest, most powerful, most efficient and sustainable single-seater electric racing car ever created – on the 2.628km long track of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

The pre-season test results achieved by the new Gen3 seat, which is very different from the previous Gen2, have been very positive and the experience and expertise gained by the ABT CUPRA team in this short period has been great. This, together with the knowledge of all the members of the ABT CUPRA team (ABT is the most successful team in the championship, with 47 podiums achieved in seven years), increases the excitement before the first race of the season to be held. City of Mexico.

CUPRA drivers have a lot of experience behind them. Dutchman Robin Frijns, 31, has already competed in six seasons in Formula E, taking two race wins. Nico Müller, meanwhile, has been involved in the electric single-seater championship since the 2017-18 season, initially as reserve, test and development driver, and later as lead driver. The 30-year-old Swiss is back in Formula E again after his last race, which was at the Monaco E-Prix in season 7.

“During pre-season, we had little time to get to know the car so the first race of the season in Mexico will definitely be a big challenge for our team. We will have to go step by step. But if we don’t make any mistakes and the car works well , we will be able to fight for points,” commented Robin Frijns.

“Mexico is the perfect place to start the season. The weather is exceptional, especially in the stadium area, where you can hear the fans from inside the car. Seeing how Mexicans live and sharing the passion for motorsport brings an extra level of motivation. , “added Nico Müller.

The event will be attended by Wayne Griffiths, CEO of CUPRA, and board members Dr. Werner Tietz (Vice President Research and Development), Markus Haupt (Vice President Production and Logistics) and Kai Vogler (Vice President Sales and Marketing), and welcomed a hundred guests, including international media and suppliers.

The amazing CUPRA UrbanRebel Racing car will also be on display in the Fan Village.
