The best compact SUVs in 2023

Of all the compact SUVs on the market, the team is there Car guide has listed the top three models that represent the best buys in this category.

These vehicles are the most popular sport utility vehicles in Quebec. These are the models loved by consumers today, who praise their raised ride, all-wheel drive and tailgate, perfect for loading the whole family’s belongings.

Years pass and the Toyota RAV4 continues to dominate its segment with authority. For the 2023 model year, the car doesn’t change much. We only note the arrival of the off-road hybrid version of the Woodland, Apple CarPlay and Android auto coming as standard as well as a revised multimedia system with an enlarged screen.

The Japanese SUV has many features, starting with a spacious and practical interior that can easily accommodate four people. The trunk, whose capacity varies between 949 and 1059 liters depending on the version, is also one of the most spacious in the category. Ride quality, very comfortable and convenient for our Quebec road network, is also important.

Finally, being able to choose a petrol version, hybrid or plug-in hybrid (Prime) is also a good move. With 68 kilometers of 100% electric range available without using fossil fuels, the RAV4 Prime is without a doubt the best of the range. The problem is that its popularity is such that the waiting list is very long.

Known for their excellent reliability, the electric versions of the RAV4 experienced a major failure and premature corrosion of the power cable that was not covered by the warranty. That said, the overall assessment remains positive, which led to the team Car guide leaving RAV4 in first place in the standings.

In 2022, the team members had decided to put the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Rogue on par. After all, both cars are based on the same technical basis …

Unless Nissan has decided to bet on a 3-cylinder turbo engine (except for the base model) and whose long-term reliability is unknown. That’s why the Rogue drops from our best SUV ranking.

Instead, Mitsubishi Outlander continues to make a good impression. The petrol model retains the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder and it is now possible to opt for a PHEV version. This plug-in hybrid version can travel 61 km without using the internal combustion engine. On the other hand, fuel consumption remains higher than that of the RAV4 Prime once the battery is depleted.

More generally, the Outlander is a comfortable and spacious SUV, which has been significantly improved compared to the outgoing model, especially the finish of the cabin and the integration of technology. Finally, its long-term warranty (5 years/100,000 km and 10 years/160,000 km) is a great advantage for buyers who want to keep their car for a long time.

3-Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage

The last step of the podium goes to the Korean duo: Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. Recently redesigned, they are known mainly for the wealth of machines they offer. Like the Toyota RAV4, it is possible to choose only gasoline, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid mechanics. The declared autonomy is lower than Toyota and Mitsubishi as it is equal to 53 km for Tucson and 55 km for Sportage. Effective mechanics, even if it is sad that they are reserved for the most elegant models.

On the road, the Tucson is more fun to drive than the Sportage. Both cars also benefit from good space, with a large trunk, the volume of which approaches or exceeds 1,000 liters depending on the version chosen. In the cabin, however, we preferred the Sportage’s controls, which are more intuitive than the Tucson’s, which lack actual physical buttons.
