The Bugatti Veyron replica has one original part

Articles come in all shapes and sizes. From the red Suzuki Alto with horse decals to the official version of the classic mini racer. They are often somewhere in the middle. Most of the time that means a Pontiac Fiero, Toyota MR2 or Peugeot 406 with a set of glass windshield panels, with all the consequences that entails.

A big example for builders is usually Ferrari or Lamborghini. However, the British designer took it even higher. The best man worked for seven long years to create a real Bugatti Veyron.

Less than half

As befits a prototype, the ‘Veyron’ stands on a homemade tubular frame. So you can compare the car with copies of Shelby Cobra and Ford GT40. Unlike those cars, a fake Bugatti certainly cannot match the performance of its ancestor.

Yet the drivetrain is better than you’d expect: behind the front seats we find the twin 4.2-liter V8 from the first-generation Audi RS6. The block is otherwise untouched, making 450 hp and 560 newton meters available. That’s less than half of the original Veyron. However, something tells us that the article also weighs about half.

Since the original W16 engine protrudes from the car, the V8 is hidden under a precise, 3D-printed replica. A ZF five-speed automatic transmission provides drive to the rear wheels.

A piece of natural glass

Replica can only be called convincing at a very quick glance. As you might expect, the thing is full of third-hand Audi parts. In addition, the side windows do not seem to connect at all.

However, the problem does not exist with the only original part of the Bugatti: the windshield. The windshield is probably the most expensive part of the entire car. Replacing the windshield costs about 50,000 euros.

Have a hobby

During the seven-year construction process, the builder spent a total of around £350,000 (€407,969). As with all car projects, it’s clear he won’t get that money back. It is estimated that the ‘Veyron’ is now worth around £150,000 (€174,843). However, you still have to find someone who is willing to give it to you. After all, for the same money you get a great second hand car that was not put together in a shed.
