Volkswagen’s electric cars are in a state of concern

Still number 3 in the world in electric cars, Volkswagen still faces problems in this area. This is confirmed by its disappointing sales figures for the 1st quarter of 2024, which have dropped significantly.

With sales increasing in France and Europe, the electric car is enjoying increasing success. And this since The offer is bigger and bigger and that public authorities continue with financial incentives, although they are slowly starting to tighten the screws.

Volkswagen looks weak

But not all manufacturers are in the same boat when it comes to this electric vehicle registration. And for good reason, Tesla and BYD remain world leaders, while Elon Musk’s company has surpassed its rival and sold more than 1.8 million zero-emission cars last year. On stage 3 of the platform, we find Volkswagen, with only 771,100 vehicles sold in 2023.

The German manufacturer is still lagging behind, its electric cars are having trouble finding their customers. So much so that the company had to implement a drastic plan to rectify the situation. Because it is also facing problems with its subsidiary Carad dedicated to the software part of its cars. But while Volkswagen recently launched its product plan, where are its sales of electric cars?

Unfortunately, it is far from being very glorious for the Wolfsburg manufacturer. The latter has revealed its figures for the 1st quarter of 2024 on communiqué, and we cannot say that it is very good. Indeed, Total subscriptions increased by 3%, also including heat models. But if you look only at electricity, it is more worrying.

The German manufacturer has not sold that 74,400 cars in Europe between the months of January and March 2024, compared to 98,300 in the same period last year. Which corresponds to down to 24.31% in one year throughout the Old Continent. Globally, electric vehicle registrations decreased by 3% for Volkswagen, while they increased by 91.2% in China.

Volkswagen wants to calm down

Furthermore, in what the manufacturer calls “worldwide”, sales of zero tailpipe vehicles increased by 40.6%. At the same time, and as indicated by journalists fromCar CleanVolvo has increased its power supply to 27% in Europe during the same period, with BMW reaching 40.6%. Suffice it to say that the differences are huge between different manufacturers.

But what is the reason? It may be that elimination of the ecological bonus in Germany at the beginning of 2024 has anything to do with it, since that country is a capital market for that company. Indeed, there, the share of electric vehicle sales has dropped from 18.4% in 2023 to 12% this year, partly for this reason. But that’s not all, because we also see global dissatisfaction with group models.

So much so that last year, the production of some of them had to be interrupted due to lack of demand. Since the beginning of the year, the ID.4 and ID.5 duo have been the best-selling of the company’s models, with 34,600 units. They are followed by the Volkswagen ID.3 (26,100 units) and the Audi Q4 e-tron (22,800 units). The group now has to consider its future ID.2 all for less than 25,000 euros to appeal, and also its cheapest ID.1.

At the same time, the latter wants to encourage and indicates in his press release that ” the number of 100% electric models ordered more than doubled year-on-year (+154%) in the first quarter of 2024«.
