12,000 square meters

Volvo Trucks will invest 75 million euros in the construction of a battery module factory in Ghent. From 2025, battery pack modules for electric trucks must be produced there by Volvo itself.

A battery module is a collection of battery cells that are connected to each other. The battery pack used for electric trucks consists of several of these modules.

The Swedish truck manufacturer already has a factory in Ghent, where the battery packs for its electric trucks are assembled. Volvo now still uses modules from Samsung, among others, which are assembled at the Belgian site. The new 12,000 square meter factory should change that.

Independence

Volvo wants to take a larger part of the truck production chain, to be less dependent on other parties. The Gothenburg company is also exploring the possibility of making its own battery cells in the future.

Volvo is not only expanding with this plant in the North Sea port, from the third quarter of 2023 electric trucks will also be assembled in Belgium. There is a company that puts like in Sweden diesel truck production line.
