Subaru Crosstrek: Compact crossover in the test

Elsewhere it has been known as the Crosstrek since 2016, and now the XV, in its third generation, carries this model name everywhere. The brand’s most successful model in Europe remains true to its concept as a compact crossover and does not transform into an SUV.

The fact that the higher relative of the Impreza prefers to take it easy is already evident in the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h, for which the all-wheel-drive Subaru Crosstrek takes almost eleven seconds.

The crossover needs an impressive 8.2 liters per 100 km in our test consumption.

There is no howling

There is little reason to complain about the continuously variable automatic transmission, which now reacts more quickly to gas commands and is not annoying with the intrusive CVT whine that was previously typical. A naturally aspirated engine typical of the brand produces 136 hp at 5,600 rpm and is supported by a 12 kW electric motor.

Together, these develop 194 Nm of maximum torque. While driving, the two-liter boxer grumbles in a deep voice that only falls silent when the gasoline engine switches off under low load and the Crosstrek glides into coasting mode.

The interaction between the petrol engine and the electric motor works perfectly. The Subaru Crosstrek switches from coasting to normal operation and vice versa without any major jerking. In local areas, the compact car can drive purely electrically for a short time. However, this does not have a significant effect on the test consumption, which levels off at an impressive 8.2 l/100 km.

Calm gait preferred

The Subaru also prefers leisureliness in curves, where the crossover leans noticeably to the side at higher speeds. Its steering, on the other hand, pleases with a good mix of lightness and stiffness but lacks precision and feedback. In keeping with the chassis, the Subaru Crosstrek’s springs and dampers are trimmed for comfort and encourage a leisurely mode of transport.

Don’t blindly trust assistants

The camera-based assistance system monitors the driver’s eyes – a warning signal follows if they stray from the road.

Subaru has made improvements to the camera-based assistance systems, which are standard in all equipment. When you let your gaze wander over the landscape, the driver recognition system responds with a warning tone and warning lights. This assistance system monitors the driver’s eyes and reminds him to look ahead. As with many other manufacturers, the traffic sign recognition is not yet fully developed and does not shy away from suggesting a speed limit of 100 km/h now and then in local areas.

Down-to-earth and reliable – a great brand! Boring and backward – no one needs it!

The new Crosstrek pleases with its comfortable setup and understandable operation. Its grumpy boxer engine is usually quite present acoustically and is not very economical.
