The most important question remains unanswered by the BMW i4 facelift (2024).

We have written before: respect for BMW that it does not fall into nostalgia, but is in line with the new times. The product that had the best reputation among German prestige brands in the field of gasoline engines also feels very much at home among the plugs. The range is already wide and will only increase from 2026, when the Neue Klasse debuts.

For example, the BMW i4, which was introduced in 2021, is an international success. Until the new BMW i3 comes to market in 2026 – the electric 3 Series – the i4 will have to manage on its own as an electric mid-size sedan. To make this special show a success, BMW is improving it.

New: BMW i4 xDrive40

BMW adds a new engine variant to the range. The i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 that we already know are joined by the i4 xDrive 40 with 401 hp. Like the M50, the xDrive40 has all-wheel drive. BMW gives it an 80 kWh battery, which brings the range up to 548 km. With the exception of the i4 eDrive35, which charges at a maximum rate of 180 kW, all versions of the i4 can charge at a rate of 205 kW.

Just a big kidney again

The facelift preserved the large kidney. And why not: despite much whining and complaining, big kidneys have enhanced rather than hindered success. The upper part of the ‘grille’ is closed, because the electric engine has less need for fresh air than the petrol engine. The headlights were also redesigned and the daytime running lights are now vertical.

Inside, BMW did something about the illogical controls. This makes it easier to operate the climate control via the touch screen and – after complaints from i4 owners – the buttons on the ventilation grilles have been improved. The two-spoke steering wheel is also new and no longer round. A three-spoke M sports steering wheel can be ordered as an option.

When will the BMW i4 M arrive?

Already with the current generation of i4, there were rumors about an M model above, which is still above the M50. BMW has previewed the i4 M, but we still don’t know if it’s coming.

Just like Mercedes G-class electric, the i4 M would have an electric motor on each wheel, so that the torque is better distributed between all four wheels. Depending on the driving situation, the control unit can quickly accelerate or brake individual wheels, making the driver more involved in driving. If the i4 M comes, we assume a power of more than 1000 hp.

The BMW i4 will be introduced in July, and prices will be announced before then.
