This ultra-fast charging Polestar 5 will impress every petrolhead – it’s full in ten minutes

Charging time for an electric car is not an issue for most owners. But for those still using fuel – perhaps the super-fast charging Polestar 5 could change that.

Current electric cars can already charge very quickly. The Tesla Supercharger charges an extra 275 km in 15 minutes, the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 have an extra 110 km of range in 5 minutes. But let’s say that all is not enough: you are a petrol driver and want to be able to drive for four hours after drinking one coffee.

Well, Polestar and StoreDot have come up with a solution for that. They have fitted the Polestar 5 model with ‘Extreme Fast Charging’ technology, also known as XFC. And with that, the Polestar 5’s battery jumps from 10 to 80 percent in ten minutes – which often takes half an hour for most current cars. Technology does that according to Polestar it is possible to charge a medium-sized electric car up to a distance of 320 km in 10 minutes. That is roughly from Utrecht to Luxembourg: completely non-stop travel.

During the test, the Polestar 5 battery was charged at a charging rate starting at 310 kW, increasing to more than 370 kW by the end of the charging period. According to Polestar, the test is very important because it shows that the XFC technology works well with the current DC charging infrastructure, which has an increasing number of chargers with a power of 350 kW or more. If the batteries in new cars can use this well, those cars will spend less time at a fast charging station.

The idea is really good

Another example mentioned by Polestar: with XFC technology, the battery can also be charged from 50 to 80 percent within five minutes. “Reducing charging time to 10 minutes with XFC technology brings it closer to the time it takes to fill up a car,” Polestar also notes. “This breakthrough is revolutionary by removing the barrier to variety and charging concerns,” said Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot.

That barrier is psychological, but that doesn’t make it any less important when choosing between a new fuel or an electric car. Because although many users charge their cars at home or at a slow public station because of the cost, it is still a good idea that it is not necessary to spend a total of 45 minutes at charging stations on the way to the Costa del Sol. , and this new technology.

This test does not yet indicate that this high-speed charging technology will also be available in the Polestar 5: there are no plans for this yet. But it is possible that future Polestars will have the technology on board.
