The Auburn Tigers stunned the Iowa Hawkeyes on Monday evening, upending their Big Ten opponents and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.
The Tigers, who had been viewed as underdogs in the matchup, earned a resounding 89-77 victory over Iowa to seal the deal. Auburn’s tenacious defense stifled the Hawkeyes’ offense, forcing turnovers and limiting Iowa’s shooting efficiency.
The Tigers’ offense was on point as well, with four players scoring in double digits. The highest scorer of the night was senior guard Samir Doughty, who put up 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior forward Anfernee McLemore also contributed 18 points and eight rebounds.
The Hawkeyes had their chances, but they were unable to capitalize on them. They were unable to convert on their 3-point attempts, and they were unable to contain Auburn’s frontcourt.
Auburn will now face off against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Sweet Sixteen. It will be a challenging matchup for the Tigers, as the Tar Heels have been one of the most dominant teams in the tournament.
Nevertheless, the Tigers have shown that they can be a force to be reckoned with. They have proven that they can compete with the top teams in the country, and they will be looking to continue their Cinderella run against North Carolina.
