NHTSA is investigating a brake problem with the Cadillac Lyriq | Car news

As Earth Day approaches, it’s an electric week at Auto123 as our news covers what’s happening and what’s happening in this world.

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), similar to Transport Canada, announced earlier this week that it had opened a preliminary investigation into complaints related to the loss of brakes on the Cadillac Lyriq, the first electric car from luxury brand. of General Motors (GM).

In total, 3,322 units have been affected.

NHTSA said it has received incident reports that described a situation where the brake pedal was hard, which was followed by a message indicating a brake system malfunction. The condition seems to occur when starting, but also when driving, which is clearly more of a concern.

The review covers models for the 2023 model year.

GM said the electronic brake control module has an internal pin that can break when the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is activated, according to NHTSA’s preliminary evaluation report.

Because of a broken axle, vehicles can lose brake assist, see their acceleration reduced and also see the ABS system lose its effectiveness, GM said, according to the NHTSA report.

GM has developed an update that will alert drivers if an axle breaks, NHTSA said.

Losing the brake assist system does not mean that the brakes no longer work, but greater power is required to achieve the same result. If you don’t expect it, it can surprise you and increase the stopping distance, thus increasing the risk of an accident.

We are monitoring this issue and will return to this topic if the company has to recall.
