After Hungary for BYD, it will finally be Spain for Chery. For several months, the Chinese manufacturer was looking for the best solution to manufacture its models in Europe.

While Italy was another destination, Chery eventually chose Nissan’s former Barcelona site, which was closed in December 2021.

So Chery will form a joint venture with local player Ebro-EV Motors, which will have a majority stake. The agreement will allow “the reconstruction of the factory in the free zone of Barcelona, owned by EV-Motors, and the production of the first model of the Ebro brand in the fourth quarter of this year.“, promises the press release.

The partners announce the production of the Ebro brand car at the end of the year and in this case the project is very similar to what Chery is already doing in Italy where its models are produced in CKD and sold by the DR Motor brand.

However, this old Nissan factory in Barcelona offers full production capacity and not just assembly of equipment. This site produced up to 200,000 Nissans per year.

So Chery can accelerate its European offensive with its production in this factory. At the moment, the Chinese want to attack Europe with its models made in China, under the brands Omoda, Jaecoo and Exlantix. It announced the launch of no less than six models under its brands by the end of 2025 in Europe.

During 2023, Chery sold 1.8 million cars (+53%), almost half of which were sold abroad. Nationalism is a strong focus of its “2024 strategy” which aims to achieve growth of 10 to 20% per year in the coming years.
