Chinese manufacturer Chery may open a factory in Europe


As Chery prepares to sell its first models in Europe, it would also look to produce locally. Italy would be in the running, but other countries also seem interested.

According to the organization Reuters, Chinese manufacturer Chery would look to set up a plant in Europe. Italy will be in the process of hosting this new site. Currently the country produces 800,000 cars, only the Stellantis type. It would once again be a major industrial player in Europe. His ambition is to quickly reach one million cars made on his soil.

With 1.88 million vehicles produced in 2023 (+52.6%), Chery is in 17th place.e place among international manufacturers, behind the American Tesla, but ahead of its partner SAIC MG-Roewe.

In China, it is among the top ten groups and announced that it has shipped 937,148 vehicles, an increase of more than 100%. Chery is present in more than fifty countries, including Turkey and some markets in South America.

Chery in Europe

In Europe, it plans to sell two SUVs this year, the Omoda 5, an electric model from the C segment, and the Jaecoo 7, also from the C segment, which would be available in hybrid electric and plug-in versions. According to our information, several French distribution groups have already been contacted to take over the panel.

If the Chery brand is not directly present in Europe, it is nevertheless indirectly present. A small part of its kind is actually sold by the Italian manufacturer DR Motor which collects CKD models in Italy.

Italy, which also welcomes Tesla to establish a second production unit at home and which pushes Stellantis to produce. Leap motor on its soil, it would not be the only European country in the race. Chery is also reportedly eyeing Spain, where it could relaunch Nissan’s former factory in Barcelona. The latter closed its doors at the end of 2021 and had the capacity to produce 200,000 vehicles.

This is not the first time that this factory has attracted the attention of a Chinese manufacturer. Great Wall Motor it had applied to take it a few months before it closed, before backing out.
