Tanks here, tanks there – everyone is talking about tanks these days. The reason for this? After weeks of back and forth, the German government has now decided to send Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks to Ukraine. Soon after, the Americans followed with their “M1A2 Abrams”.

It has been known from England since the middle of January that they will send a few of their “Challenger 2”. And the Russians? Tried and tested T-90. Do all these names mean nothing to you? Then this list with all the technical details of four tanks will give you the answers you need.

Leopard 2A6, Germany

The Leopard 2A6 main battle tank is considered a good overall package. So good that the Swiss Army also bought over 100 of the early model 2A4. While the standard version doesn’t have any bells and whistles like active protection, the Leopard boasts some in-house technology. Above all, its accuracy (also in motion) is considered excellent thanks to a highly developed stabilization mechanism (see video below).

M1A2 Abrams, USA

The Abrams family of tanks has a long combat history. During Operation Desert Storm, the M1 proved its superiority over the Iraqi Army’s (aging) T-72. Rumor has it that one Abrams destroyed seven T-72s in a row without taking any major damage itself. Even today, due to various technical developments, Abrams is still one of the top tanks in the world.

T-90A, Russia

The flagship of the Russian cavalry is the T-90A, the most modern version of the T-90. As of January 2022, 350 T-90A and 67 T-90M were operational, which are more modern and better armed and protected. However, since model A is the dominant force, we present its data here.

Challenger 2, England

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in mid-January that Britain intends to send 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. According to the manufacturer, great importance was attached to the safety of employees when creating the British car. Challenger 2 uses armor called “Chobham”, which is said to be twice as strong as conventional rolled steel.

  • Battle Row: Up to 9000 m due to the rifled barrel, but the projectiles have low penetration power, which can be a problem against heavily armed opponents.

  • Weight: 63 t combat weight
  • Speed: 60 km/h, 40 km/h off road
  • Frequency: 550 km
  • Special: Additional external fuel tanks (rarely used by other jurisdictions as they are very dangerous); used as the only lead for depleted uranium (the NATO standard is tungsten)

Of course there are only numbers here, main battle tanks can only be compared to a small scale based on this data. One main question is the main one: Do the cars work well in the Ukrainian territory? Only time will tell us the answer to this question.
