Consumers should be wary of a TikTok trend that has put Kia and Hyundai cars at risk of being stolen. The popular social media platform has sparked a trend of car-hopping, whereby users gain access to Kia and Hyundai vehicles by exploiting keyless entry systems.
This activity, while seemingly innocuous, poses a significant risk to the safety and security of the vehicles. The trend has become prevalent enough that the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has issued a consumer alert warning of the associated dangers.
The NICB alert identifies an apparent vulnerability in the keyless entry systems of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The alert explains that the system can be manipulated to gain access to the vehicle and start the car, even if the correct key fob is not used.
This technique, known as “signal amplification,” involves using a device that amplifies the signal from the key fob, allowing it to be detected at a greater distance. This method can be used to unlock the car, start the engine, and even drive away without the presence of the key fob.
The NICB cautions consumers to be vigilant and advises that all Kia and Hyundai owners should ensure their vehicles are parked in a secure location with robust locks. Additionally, the NICB recommends that drivers utilize a steering wheel lock and park in well-lit areas.
The NICB also stresses the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and taking steps to protect oneself from potential car theft. This includes avoiding areas known to be frequented by car thieves and remaining vigilant when parking in public areas.
Given the risks posed by the TikTok trend, it is essential that Kia and Hyundai owners take extra precautions to protect their vehicles. The NICB consumer alert serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of the car-hopping trend and the need for greater security measures.
