Consumer testing: Hyundai IONIQ 5

Three test drivers were sent with the Hyundai IONIQ 5, tasked with recording all their results for the Kieskeurig.nl EV Endurance Test. Some of the test drivers had experienced EVs before, for another test driver the IONIQ 5 was their first introduction to an electric vehicle.

Each tester drove the car for a long time for a week, just like they would with their car. With the whole family, short distances, long journeys, through the city and on the highway: various scenarios of use are covered. The car was extensively tested for three weeks in total. Electricity charges quickly

The first Hyundai IONIQ 5 appeared on the roads of the Netherlands in 2021. At that time it was an amazing car: no brand could offer a high-quality electric design in the same price range. Thanks to the 800V high-voltage system, fast charging with a power of 239 kW is possible. Which in practice means 18 minutes of fast charging to charge the battery to 80 percent and fill it to 10 percent. This still gives the IONIQ 5 a big lead over most competitors.

It is not an economic miracle

With a 77.4kWh battery, a very usable 507 kilometers can be covered on a full charge. That is, when the operating conditions are optimal. In the cold months, every electric car uses more energy, for example bringing the battery to the most efficient temperature possible with the internal temperature. Test drivers Joost and Marcel note that the IONIQ 5 is certainly not an economy miracle in winter, but with a usable range of 350 to 400 km they are very satisfied.

Big set, small luggage

Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a very good car. Benefits for interior space, because everyone sits very comfortably in the front and back. “Our son is 2.03 meters tall, and he even had enough legroom and headroom in the back,” says test driver Dorottya. However, passenger space comes at the expense of trunk space. “The length of the luggage compartment is limited under the hood. However, in the front there is an important front part (‘frunk’, ed.) for, for example, a charging cable or transporting takeaways,” says test driver Joost.

Get used to it

Three test drivers praise the driving comfort that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has to offer on the road. The soft suspension is relaxing, and the electric motor delivers its performance with ease. “The car performs well in the city and on the highway,” says car enthusiast Marcel. Anyone getting behind the wheel of the IONIQ 5 for the first time will need some time to get used to the controls. You also have to learn to live with modern safety and driver assistance systems. In some cases, electronic interference is considered too obvious.

Conclusion: Buying Hyundai IONIQ 5?

Hyundai IONIQ 5 has many features. The driving comfort in particular was found to be very pleasant by the test drivers. And after some time to get used to it, the car is easy to operate. But the IONIQ 5 also has significant limitations. The standard size of the luggage compartment is a subject that returns in every driver’s test report. However, the final verdict is positive: “One of the best EVs in its class.”
