After the bad news from Fisker that it needs urgent financial help, the industry is speculating who will be the rescue partner. According to Reuters, Nissan is ready. The Japanese are interested in Fisker’s special model.

Electric car maker Fisker, which is struggling financially, is in promising talks with Japanese manufacturer Nissan. This comes from an unconfirmed report by the “Reuters” news agency, which cites “two people familiar with the talks”. In the talks, the Japanese seem to be interested in the Alaska electric pickup truck, which Fisker really wanted to bring to the US market in 2025.

In August 2023, the American manufacturer presented a schedule of future models with the Fisker Ocean at the “Product Vision Day”. In addition to the Alaska (for about 42,000 euros), the Fisker Pear family car, which has been postponed for a year, should also come to the market in 2025 (for 30,000 euros). However, plans for more models were initially halted by the announcement of Fisker’s financial problems. The goal was to gain market share with Fisker Ocean, it said in a February 29 statement.

According to a Reuters report, talks between Fisker and Nissan are already underway and could be completed this month. There is a capital injection of 400 million euros from the Japanese as well as the construction of the Alaska model in one of Nissan’s plants in the USA. However, production will not begin until 2026. Nissan’s future electric pick-up would be built on the same platform as the Fisker model.

However, the delay could be a setback for Fisker. Company boss Henrik Fisker himself said that the window of opportunity for new manufacturers of electric vehicles to succeed is closing by 2025. In addition, competition in the electric pick-up sector is growing. These include mainly the Ford F-150 Radi and the Tesla Cybertruck, but also the electric version of the Chevrolet Silverado and the American Rivian R1T.

Nissan was originally one of the pioneers of electromobility. The Japanese had already introduced the Jani, a true BEV, in 2010. However, Nissan lost its lead over the years and has now launched the Ariya electric SUV. Since re-forming the alliance with Renault, Nissan has now gone its own way to gain points in electromobility and concluded individual partnerships.

Fisker himself did not comment on the report when asked by Reuters. However, the head of the company Henrik Fisker had stated in previous talks with the organization that the electric car maker was in contact with five other manufacturers for the purpose of cooperation. Last Thursday he blocked the discussion for one car manufacturer.
