For several decades the Honda Civic’s direct rival in Brazil was the Toyota Corolla. Not anymore – due to the difference in technology and especially in price (R$ 54,310 more). The goal of the Honda Civic Hybrid is VW Jetta GLIa mid-size sedan that was alone in the top performance category.
The battle between the Civic Hybrid and the Jetta GLI is a good one. And Volkswagen customers are not as loyal as Toyota, which is why Honda has positive expectations for this conflict.
power and performance
THE Honda Civic e:HEV draws its maximum power from the electric traction motor: 184 horsepower with 315 Newton meters is immediately available when the driver steps on the accelerator pedal. It also has a 143 hp 2.0 engine with overdrive, so that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in a good 7.8 seconds.
The Volkswagen Jetta has a powerful 350 TSI 2.0 turbo engine with 231 hp and 350 Nm. Gains in power and torque (which appears below 1,500 rpm). Therefore, it achieves from 0 to 100 in 6.7 seconds (it is 1.1 seconds faster). In the fight for speed, the Jetta GLI wins, reaching 249 km / h, while the Civic Hybrid only goes up to 180 km / h.
With such a powerful combustion engine, Jetta GLI is limited to 9.9 km / l of gasoline in the city and 12.2 on the highway. It takes a shower of economy from the Civic Hybrid, which does 18.3 km / l in the city and 15.9 on the highway. However, it’s easy to run more economically with the Civic, and that doesn’t happen much when you’re behind the wheel of the Jetta GLI.
Size is not a document
Honda Civic has better space utilization than VW Jetta. Larger (4,747 m vs. 4,679 m), the Jetta loses in wheelbase (2,680 m vs. 2,735 m) and has only 15 liters of trunk (510 vs. 495 liters). Also, the Civic is slightly wider than the Jetta, but it loses in length.
The Honda Civic Hybrid has 8 airbags and the Volkswagen Jetta GLI has 6. The Civic has some unique features: rear seat airbags, power folding mirrors, glove box lighting and a power adjustable passenger seat. .
VW Jetta GLI also has exclusive features: rear traffic alert, automatic braking in maneuvers, butterfly gear, heated glass, sunroof, driver’s seat with memory and ventilated and heated seats.
Multimedia and connectivity
The Civic comes with myHonda Connect (which lets you control some of the car’s systems via a mobile phone), multimedia, electronic noise cancellation and a premium sound system with a subwoofer.
The Jetta GLI also has good multimedia and adds things like GPS navigation, an internal hard drive and a memory card reader.
It is for the price that the Volkswagen Jetta has an advantage over the Honda Civic. The difference between the two cars is R$17,910, a detail that complicates the Honda dealer’s argument. The Jetta GLI costs BRL 226,990. The Civic Hybrid costs R$244,900.
But price is not everything. For those looking for a car with a more modern engine and an ecological perspective, the new Honda Civic e:HEV is more attractive, despite the expensive price.
