These low costs of electricity compared to the average consumption of trucks and cooling systems enable large investment costs to be paid back more quickly. To alleviate the situation, Goldschmaus submitted a total of three funding applications for electric refrigerated trucks and also received three funding notices. The project of electric trucks for local transport is funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport for a total of 335,780.74 euros as part of the funding directive for light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative drives, climate-friendly and refueling and related. payment infrastructure (KsNI). Funding guidelines are coordinated by NOW GmbH, applications are approved by the Federal Office for Transport and Mobility.

Reserved car concept: Volvo, Schmitz and Mitsubishi

With positive financing decisions, the way was clear for the configuration and ordering of vehicles, including a Schmitz refrigerator and a Mitsubishi cooling system. For the base vehicle, the choice fell on the Volvo FL with 16 tons of GVW and 42 cubic meters of loading volume in a clean service refrigerated box from Schmitz Cargobull.

Shipments of new services at +2 degrees Celsius are certified according to IFS Food, which also means that the target temperatures are constantly monitored. When it comes to cooling technology, the Goldschmaus Group has relied on Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi Thermal Transport Europe GmbH (MTTE) for over 20 years – a long-term partnership.

TEJ in full electric version is the system of choice for the user.

“It is the first transport refrigeration system that can be operated with direct current (DC) and is therefore already prepared for fully electric trucks,” explains MTTE sales manager Christian Meyer, who also managed the project. “In addition, the hyper inverter technology developed by Mitsubishi ensures a good balance of cooling performance and battery capacity. Because the inverter always adjusts the compressor rotation speed.

Another advantage of the new electric TEJ is that it covers a wide operating voltage range of 250 to 400 volts DC, in which the full performance of the system can always be achieved with a hyper inverter, according to the manufacturer. The hermetic compressor also ensures a long service life for the unit.

“It was clear to us as consumers from the beginning: when we buy the first electric truck, it can only come with electric cooling. This means that we have a total zero-emission package, and only 100 percent zero-emission solutions make sense to us, ” adds Goldschmaus managing director Daniel Runde.

Battery pack from AddVolt

The advantage of the built-in combination is that the cooling machine is independent provided by the AddVolt battery pack with a capacity of 34.6 kWh that can be charged separately. This means there is no load on the truck’s traction battery. The cargo area can also be further cooled during unloading stops. Thanks to its high energy efficiency, the Mitsubishi TEJ achieves a maximum cooling output of 13,000 watts at a load space temperature of 0 degrees Celsius.

“The air conditioner battery previously only had to be charged once a week on tour. With a battery capacity of 250 kWh, the Volvo FL Electric has so far achieved an electric range of up to 300 km without any problems according to the data sheet, ” said Goldschmaus fleet manager Lutz Kalkbrenner after the first few months of actual operation. .

According to users, the average consumption so far has been around 75 kWh per 100 km – a very good value for a refrigerated vehicle with a GVW of 16 tonnes. However, the period from August to November was short and the evaluation of the whole year is still pending.

“The performance of the TEJ 130 is excellent,” summarizes Goldschmaus managing director Daniel Runde at the MTTE press event in November 2023 in Osnabrück. “The system cools quickly and reliably. Thanks to self-sufficiency, the cooling machine can be operated for a long time and provide full performance when needed.”

Reason enough for the customer to order the next two refrigerator cars and TEJ refrigeration machines.
