Complete electric concepts can evolve into production versions for the Chinese market

  • Buick revealed two new concept models at the Beijing Auto Show, hinting at future production models in China.
  • The Electra L is a sedan aimed at the electric luxury car segment, while the Electra LT is an elevated car with a more attractive character.
  • Both EVs are built on the GM Ultium platform, offering a luxurious interior and exclusive features with a driving range exceeding 435 miles / 700 km.

Buick may be an American brand, but its biggest market is China. Last year, it sold more than 517,000 vehicles there, compared to just 167,030 vehicles in the United States. This explains why China has access to exciting concepts like the recently introduced Electra L and Electra LT, which had their world premiere at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show.

The Electra L represents a mid-size sedan, while its counterpart, the Electra LT, takes the form of a raised, brake-style sedan. Both models are built on the GM Ultium architecture.

The Electra L measures 5,036 millimeters (198.3 inches) and has a wheelbase of 3,000 millimeters (118.1 inches), making it similar in size to the BMW i5, Mercedes EQE, and Tesla Model S. The exterior design is inspired by the 2022 Buick Wildcat concept. , although it looks stylish and close to production.

The Electra L stands out with its “spread wings” LED graphics adorning the sculpted front bumper and turbine-style alloy wheels. Its slim tail that sweeps back boasts an integrated spoiler above the full-width headlamp units, giving it a sleek look. Additionally, the Electra L incorporates reversing cameras and hidden door handles, enhancing its aerodynamic profile.

The sedan is joined by the Electra LT concept, an elevated sports car version with a more attractive character. The Electra LT features discreet fender extensions, “titanium steel armor” wheels, and an aerodynamic roof box that can accommodate skis, skateboards, bicycles and other types of gear. It also features an adjustable air suspension that can increase ground clearance by up to 40 mm (1.6 inches) when needed.

Accompanying the sedan is the Electra LT concept, an elevated sports car variant with a more adventurous spirit. The LT features subtle fender flares, “titanium steel armor” wheels, and an aerodynamic roof box that can accommodate skis, skateboards, bicycles, and a variety of gear. Additionally, it includes an adaptive air suspension system that can increase ground clearance by up to 40 mm (1.6 inches) when needed.

The interior boasts four “zero-gravity” seats with “Surflex” cushions, upholstered in eco-friendly suede upholstery in purple and white. Adding to the futuristic theme, the dashboard hosts a floating, slightly curved digital cockpit, complemented by a head-up display. Additionally, the passenger screen discreetly retracts into the glove box when not in use.

Another nice feature is the tea table on the rear dashboard, allowing occupants to enjoy a cup of tea on the go. A light-sensing sunroof, aroma diffuser, and AI-backed infotainment also help in creating a pleasant environment.

Both concepts are built on the GM Ultium architecture, which includes a single rear electric motor producing 342 hp (255 kW / 347 PS). Buick claims a range of over 700 kilometers (435 miles) under CLTC protocols, although battery capacity has not yet been specified.

Unfortunately, there’s no confirmed timeline for when we’ll see production versions of the Buick Electra L and LT concept join the Chinese automaker’s lineup. In any case, the EVs will be manufactured by the SAIC-GM joint venture in China.
