Chery offers a car record
Inspired by tuna
It’s not very good, but it’s effective. Chery’s aerodynamics research has a record breaking coefficient of only 0.168. The new results will be incorporated into future Chinese series models and help them achieve greater electric ranges.

In order to achieve a large electric range, many manufacturers are working on the aerodynamics of their cars. The same goes for the Chinese company Chery. A drag coefficient of just 0.168…

The similarity of Chery’s later research with fish is not entirely accidental. In addition to artificial intelligence, nature also helped Chinese manufacturers with their computer calculations when creating a test car.
The shape of the concept car is heavily inspired by the streamlined body of the tuna. Based on the folding of the dorsal fin of the tuna, Chery’s manufacturers designed air control elements with a similar shape to reduce the drag coefficient as much as possible.
More about Chery’s plans
After more than 2,000 adjustments on the computer, a drag coefficient of 0.168 was finally achieved for the electric test car. Full record. A car from an Asian manufacturer has never had such a good towing quotient. With its 0.168, the Chery model is better than, for example, the teardrop-shaped solar car Lightyear 0 (0.175) or the production model Lucid Air (0.197).
No series production is planned
“With our concept, we show what is currently possible in terms of a range of battery-electric models,” explains Jochen Tüting (49), managing director of Chery’s development center in Raunheim, Germany. “As a traditional car manufacturer, we are a technology-driven company with more than 5,500 manufacturers worldwide,” says Tüting, describing the strength of the Chery Group. “And with our aerodynamic concept car we are giving insight into our constant efforts to develop innovative technologies for the benefit of our customers.”
Chery: 40 new models by the end of 2025
China’s Chery Group has been China’s top auto supplier for 20 years. In 2022 alone, more than a third of the more than 1.2 million cars produced were exported around the world. And Chery also has big plans for the coming years. About 40 new cars from various models are planned worldwide by the end of 2025 alone. Pure combustion engines are no longer an issue – therefore, 15 electric models and 24 hybrid models are currently in production. To achieve this, the global production network of currently 14 locations is to be expanded to include new production facilities around the world in the coming years. And: Chery runs the largest safety and crash test center in Asia at its headquarters.
In Switzerland, Chery will launch this summer with the Omoda brand and the Omoda 5 model, which has already been launched in South and Central America – a 4.40-meter-long crossover, previously available here as a 200 hp gasoline engine and later as well. and an electric car only and will offer a range of 440 kilometers. The Omoda 5 should cost between 30,000 francs (petrol) and 40,000 francs (electric).

Series production of the prototype is not planned. However, the knowledge gained from the research should be incorporated into future Chery models – for example in cars from the Chery Omoda and Jaecoo brands, which will be launched on the market this year.
