Brad Binder (11/KTM): “Best day of the year” / MotoGP

For KTM, the first day at the Spanish GP in Jerez did not go according to plan. Apart from Pedro Acosta in 6th place, all other KTM MotoGP riders struggled. Brad Binder crashed and missed qualifying for Q2.

After finishing 8th in the first free practice session of the MotoGP class at the Circuito de Jerez, Brad Binder was in a good position at the start of qualifying on Friday afternoon. From the start, the Red Bull KTM factory rider set the fastest time and led the field by almost half the session.

As we were tracking times in the final for the crucial Q2 live slot on Saturday, Binder lost control of his RC16 at turn 7. The South African was unhurt, but had to watch as other drivers improved their lap times. In the end it was enough for 11th place and a detour through Q1 on Saturday at the track in Andalusia. By the way, on the lap that ended with a crash, the KTM rider was on track with a perfect time.

“We changed something on the front spring of the bike and immediately it felt like I finally got my bike back,” reported Binder about the start of the day on the 4.2 km long course. “I had confidence when braking and going into the corner, that was strong.”

“I was very fast all afternoon too, so I wanted to put pressure on myself to complete a fast lap. “Unfortunately I pushed too hard and crashed,” said the 28-year-old. “The wind was a bit strong on this lap and I went out very well in the previous corner, so I had to turn 7 years faster.”

Ultimately, it was a mixed day for Binder, but the positives were ahead. “I was unlucky, but in the end it’s part of it. “I had good speed and pace,” said the KTM rider. Finally, he emphasized: “For me it was the best day of the year because I felt really good again for a long time. It’s really a shame that I crashed and therefore didn’t go further, because Acosta has a chance in Q2. But my first two sectors on this circuit were 0.5 seconds better than the specified lap.
