Kubica drives first free practice for Alfa Romeo

Tomorrow the men’s drivers will start the first free practice sessions at the Barcelona circuit. Many teams are bringing updates to the Spanish circuit and the new features will be tested tomorrow for the first time. Some teams do it with players and reserves in the car.

The Alfa Romeo team announced today that Robert Kubica will be at work in the first free practice session. The Polish reserve driver will take over from Guanyu Zhou. Kubica is the third reserve to run the first practice. Williams previously announced that Nyck de Vries will start work, Jüri Vips will be behind the wheel of Red Bull.

Unlike Vips and de Vries, Kubica is not a rookie. The Pole was active in Formula 1 from 2006 to 2010. A fatal rally crash meant he had to put his Formula 1 dreams out of his mind. In 2019 he returned to Formula 1 at Williams before becoming a reserve driver at Alfa Romeo. In that capacity, he replaced Kimi Räikkönen at Zandvoort and Monza last season. He also drove for the Swiss team during winter testing this season.
