Electric cars from Maserati: Is there anything else coming?

For a brand that is so closely associated with the acoustic experience of a large displacement eight-cylinder engine, changes in vehicle technology are quite difficult. Maserati is emotion, Maserati is loud, Maserati is sports luxury – and yet from 2030 it will be silent. Until then, the Italians only want to produce electric cars. Similar cars are given the additional name “Folgore”, the Italian word for “electricity” after the model name. Grecale, GranTurismo, GranCabrio, Levante, MC20, Quattroporte – all are meant to translate the DNA of the brand into a new era. Nothing has hit the streets yet.

Not a single Dreizack Stromer can be found in the 2023 KBA stats. Is that surprising? Less likely. Electric versions of the Grecale, GranCabrio and GranTurismo were originally announced for 2023. In reality, however, the cars are only now in production with a slight delay. The manufacturer says the GranTurismo sports car is already on its way to retail. At least the Grecale and GT should go on sale by the end of the first quarter of 2024. Both have been available on the online configurator for some time. A convertible will follow later in 2024.

Grecale and GranTurismo can already be put together in a configuration as an electronic version of “Folgore”. It will go on sale at the end of the first quarter of 2024.

The electronic strategy remains

“Maserati’s electric strategy remains unchanged,” a spokesperson confirmed to us when asked. Some online portals, however, suspect the Italians will agree. The Quattroporte, whose electric version is currently being developed, was previously announced for 2025. However, this still unknown date moves further into the future. Existing V8 models are currently sold in the large sedan and large Levante SUV. The drive from Maranello will no longer be available for the next generation. The production of the Levante itself will also be completely stopped on March 31, 2024. Maserati tells us that the market launch is only a matter of time, especially with the Quattroporte Folgore as one of the main models. Some media outlets report insufficient amounts due to supplier prices being too high.

Although Maserati holds all Folgore models lined up, the Ghibli’s days may be numbered. Instead, the upcoming Quattroporte will be available with both a short and a long wheelbase, as Maserati General Manager Grant Barling announced in 2022. The short version then replaces the Ghibli. You can see how the electric Maserati drives in our photo gallery at the top of the article.

No, he sits like a small Quattroporte!Yes, Ghibli have traditions!

Maserati is sticking to its electric strategy, even as conflicting rumors are currently circulating online. With the exception of the Ghibli, which is completely out of the portfolio, the entire series will also be offered as a “Folgore” electric model. According to the manufacturer, only the introduction dates have been pushed back. From 2030 onwards, all combustion engine models will disappear from the range.
