MBBS Students: Performance Stress Disrupts Gmc Medicos | Nagpur news

Nagpur: A recent study conducted by department of psychiatry Government College and Hospital (GMCH) found that 40% of MBBS students suffer from stress.
An alarmingly large number have experts involved. They believe it can have a negative impact on academic performance and the general well-being of students.

The study was conducted under the guidance of associate professor of psychiatry Dr Manish Thackeray, who also heads the Psychiatry Society of Nagpur (PSN). The study involved a comprehensive assessment of 250 MBBS students.
The study further highlights the increased emphasis on students who come from small towns and rural areas to medical schools. “Stress comes from being away from home and family and living in a different city. While some students manage to cope with the pressure, others find it heavy, which has a negative impact on their studies,” said Dr. Manish Thakre.
As a result of the stress, students have reported problems such as a deterioration in the quality of their academic work, and their problems finding time to eat and sleep. Many said that they spend a lot of time seeking treatment for various stress-related illnesses.
The findings of this study emphasize the urgent need to address the mental health issues of MBBS students. GMCH will expand the scope of this research in the next academic year.
“The study involved 250 MBBS students from GMCH. Stress was observed in 110 of them. Various causes of stress also emerged. We are planning to study students with more stress,” said Dr Thakre.
He added that effective stress management strategies and counseling services should be readily available to help students.
“Everyone goes through stress in this age of cutthroat competition. It is important to control the pressure correctly. MBBS students who are found to have excessive stress will be given counselling. Efforts will be taken to focus not only on studies, but exercise, sleep and entertainment as well,” he said, explaining the future plans of his department.
