For the Stuttgart-based carmaker, the series of milestones continues. A total of 11,000 vehicles have been affected in Germany.

Munich – car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz was hit by a faulty design in two of its models and recalled a total of 341,000 vehicles worldwide on Thursday. Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS models from 2017 to 2023 are affected.

There is now a risk of fire in the Mercedes GLE and GLS models due to incorrect design

As described in the message in the recall database Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), “an incorrect screw connection of the cable lug to the 48V ground terminal under the passenger seat may have come loose” during the assembly process.

This can increase the electrical contact resistance at the connection point, it reported Südwestdeutsche Rundfunk (SWR) based on group information. The high electrical currents that then flow through the connection can cause the temperature to rise to a level that could cause a fire.

The current recall campaign is just one of many recent ones

The current case is the end of a series of recalls by the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz within a few months. At the end of February (February 20, 2024), the Stuttgart car manufacturer had to go worldwide. Order 250,000 cars for the workshop. The reason for this was a problem with fuses, like this one ADAC it was reported at the time. The recall affected the AMG GT, C-Class, CLE, E-Class, EQE, EQS, GLC, S-Class and SL models built in 2023. In Germany, around 37,000 vehicles had to be taken out of circulation. And a week earlier, around 75,000 cars were affected due to an incorrectly installed part in the engine compartment – which also posed a fire risk.

In addition, KBA had already issued a recall for almost 100,000 Mercedes in December (December 21, 2023). KBA criticized the work of the software that is responsible for engine control. It causes this ADAC According to this, the car’s exhaust gas purification system works perfectly in a certain type of outside temperature, the so-called temperature window.

To fix this, affected diesel engines must have a software update as ordered by KBA. According to the company, diesel models in particular with Euro 5 and Euro 6b emission standards were recalled in December. According to the KBA, anyone who did not respond to the call even had to expect their car to be impounded. (fh)
