Mercedes gives the electric G-Class a very surprising name

How is it growing? Mercedes G-Class electric mentioned? Simple, you might think, EQG, because then it fits into the list of EQA, EQB, EQE, EQS, and so on. But more surprisingly, Mercedes chooses something else, a strange and confusing name.

Mercedes has yet to officially announce what the G-Class will be called, but we can already read the name in the program for the Beijing auto show. The brand does not choose EQG, because that seems very logical, but G 580 with EQ Technology.

No more electric names

A strange move, it seems for the first time, but we understand that car brands are fighting to name their electric models. In the early years you want to distinguish EVs from gasoline cars, but now that more and more EVs are coming, the separate label is no longer appropriate.

Because if in a few years there are no more gasoline and diesel models, but only electric ones, then EQE can only be called E-Class, for example. And G 580 with EQ Technology is a kind of middle form, probably.

Now we assume that ‘G 580 with EQ Technology’ is not fully specified on the tailgate of the electric G-Class, but simply says G 580. So you can no longer see at a glance which G model you are dealing with.

What? do we know anything about the G 580? Yes, it has four electric motors, one for each wheel. It is not yet known how much power the model has, but we guess at 550 hp, because for a model like the G 580 it must be more powerful than the G 500, which produces 449 hp.

The battery capacity of the G 580 will be at least 100 kWh, but do not be under any illusions about the variety, because it is probably limited by the unfavorable aerodynamics and high weight of the German ‘sea vessel’.
