These are still cars that are primarily intended to provide the satisfaction of drivers who love to drive. In some areas, however, we have to accept some compromises.

Perhaps even more than styling, because this has remained original and innovative over the years. It is difficult to confuse the Mini with any other model and although under the hood and in the chassis we can find a lot of technology from BMW (to which the British brand belongs), from the outside, but also in the cabin, we can. get a lot of taste styling.

In addition to the general outline of the body, the Mini model, there are also many details that please the eye. It features a distinctive vent on the bonnet, round headlights, “gills” on the front fenders, or a stylish sports bonnet. Attractive rims were also taken care of, and even small ones like the rear LED lights were arranged to resemble the British flag. However, the British sometimes joke about this detail – after all, it is a German car, at least from the construction side. So maybe the rear lights should be arranged in the shape of a German sausage?

The design of the interior of the cabin is also as it should be, but in the current generation of Mini we can get more electricity here. An important change is the removal of the analog indicators located behind the steering wheel. In their place, as befits a modern car, there is only a screen. It still moves with the steering wheel, but all the signs are now just fine-tuned pixels. I would like to add that they are arranged with taste, because all the signs shown here are legible and do not spoil the uniqueness of the Mini. A big advantage. However, I have to put a small minus for the limited possibility of customization of what we see on the screen. The systems of, for example, the Volkswagen Group allow much more.

Mini Cooper S – multimedia from BMW, but this is not a disadvantage

On the center console we have a second screen, this time an 8.8-inch touchscreen. It is attached to a large circle that used to be a speedometer. T.it is now the place for navigation, radio or many other menus that are sewn into the multimedia system on board. The latter was transferred from BMW, but that is not a minus. Thanks to this, the whole thing works quickly, intuitively, and the navigation is quite good and connected to the Internet – we even get information about traffic jams, and when necessary, also with weather forecasts or new news from Poland and the world. Not only that, the knowledge of selected areas can be easily expanded due to the connection with Wikipedia.

On-board multimedia is controlled either through the touch screen (you just need to know the menu structure) or by using the knob between the seats. For this we have a few shortcuts for the most important functions, such as navigation, the music section, or those related to connectivity. An effective addition to the screen is the LED ring around it, which changes color depending on what is happening – if we set the temperature or adjust the volume. A gadget, of course, but effective and pleasing to the eye.

Mini Cooper S – a car that is a gadget

So, in a way, the whole Mini can be treated a bit like a toy, because performance is not its forte. For example, although the front seats are very comfortable, people taller than 180 cm are unlikely to be happy with the space. It’s just tight in the back. For this we also have a small trunk, 278-liter. A mini city car will definitely not be a good traveling companion for a family. Even for those with small children, because putting car seats in the back is not an easy thing. Better to just leave it alone. So let’s take the Mini as a normal city car for one or a couple, which – while it won’t be a trip with a bunch of luggage – will also be suitable for long trips.

In the Cooper S version, it will get us to our destination very quickly, because there is a 178-hp, 2-liter engine under the hood, which – as it is today – is unique. After all, the same power is now available without any problems even from the 1.2 liter engine. Mini, however, departed from reduction, which was fashionable years ago, and all for good, because thanks to this it accelerates voluntarily, there is no shortage of power at low revs, and fuel consumption, even when driving at speed, it doesn’t. increase very quickly. In practice, when you drive without worrying too much about the principles of eco-driving, you can calculate an average fuel consumption of about 7-8 l / 100 km – from the city and the highway. On the road, on a road with a speed limit of 90 km / h, it is possible to get even less than 6 l / 100 km. This is good for a car with a 2 liter engine.

Mini Cooper S – driving like a dream

The biggest advantage of the Mini, apart from the attractive styling and good engine, is its handling and chassis. The fact is, the components were transferred from BMW, mainly from the 1 series and some models of the 2 series, those with front drive. The chassis in the Mini, however, seems to have been tuned with more attention to handling quality. The same goes for the steering, which is very direct and provides a real, precise driving feel. Which is true, because the Mini responds to our commands like the go-kart mentioned once in this commercial. Driving the Mini, especially in the Cooper S version, is fun!

Fortunately, it is not damaged by the double-clutch gearbox, which was previously a problem in some BMW models – it worked very slowly, sometimes it vibrated. The current generation of transmission used in the Mini works well, quickly, does not make any surprises and does not take long to think when you press the throttle hard. It slows down immediately and the car starts to accelerate decently. It is a very good 7-speed automatic. All in all, it’s a pity that in Poland there are few race tracks and places where you can go crazy with a sports car. The Mini Cooper S invites you to visit such a place and see for yourself and the car.

Mini Cooper S – is it worth buying?

It depends, because the Mini is a very special model. Not very efficient because of the narrow interior, small trunk, narrow rear door. It is very expensive for a segment B car, because of the high-quality suspension, refined details and the interior is finished to a first-class level. But the Mini is also exciting, can be a lot of fun to drive and remains a good companion in the city. If one has the desire to have such a car in his garage and can afford it, the Mini is worth recommending.
