The Mitsubishi D:X concept shows the Delica of the future

With the D:X Concept study, Mitsubishi presented an off-road vehicle at the Japan Motor Show in Tokyo, which is intended to be the forerunner of the next-generation Mitsubishi Delica. The brand calls the concept a “crossover MPV”.

In Europe, the Delica was last known as the Mitsubishi Space Gear, but imports were discontinued in 2003. The Delica is still represented in the Japanese market and has now reached its fifth generation (Delica D:5). The D:X study that has just been presented takes the basic idea of a small car with off-road capabilities. This is a tradition; For example, the all-wheel drive from Mitsubishi that we sold as the L300 had Pajero off-road technology.

Off road six seater

The study comes as six chairs with individual seats that can be adjusted and rotated in different ways. There is no B-pillar; Front and sliding doors provide wide and easy access to the van. Attractive plastic covers on all sides give the study a strong off-road look with its angular design.

The cockpit has a large color screen that could easily pass for a living room TV based on the size. Camera images should be displayed on this during off-road operation to clearly show the environment during off-road driving. Instead of rear-view mirrors, there are external cameras whose images are projected onto monitors on the A-pillar.

Full overview

Another special feature is the transparent front: the glass surface continues under the actual windshield, which provides a nice detail. A small smartphone-sized display is integrated into the steering wheel and provides information on the most important driving data.

As for the engine, Mitsubishi is planning an unspecified plug-in hybrid drive in the D:X Concept, which means the car can be used both as an electric city car and as a touring car.

The Mitsubishi Delica is no longer sold here, but it still has its place in the domestic market. The D:X Concept study at the Japan Motor Show in Tokyo shows how Mitsubishi might envision the next generation. The combination of a van and an SUV with high off-road suitability is not far off – this has already been the case for the Delica.
