News: Polestar 4 can now be ordered

Polestar 4 is between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of specifications and price. The Polestar 4 is based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) developed by Geely Holding. This SUV coupe is in the D segment with its large body and 2,999 mm wheelbase. Overall length is 4,840 mm, width 2,139 mm and height 1,534 mm.

Polestar announced at the end of 2023 that the Polestar 4 will have the lowest carbon footprint of all its models at launch. The Polestar 4 is produced at Geely Holdings’ SEA plant in Hangzhou Bay, China, which combines green electricity with I-REC hydroelectricity certification and photovoltaic electricity generated from the factory’s roof. The use of low-carbon aluminum from hydroelectric smelters helps further reduce climate impacts. In addition, data on the fraction of aluminum recovered is included in the assessment for the first time.

The Polestar 4 Long-Range Single Engine has a carbon footprint of 19.9 tCO2e, while the Long-Range Dual Engine has a carbon footprint of 21.4 tCO2e. Aluminum represents 22.4-24% of the carbon footprint, while iron and steel make up 20%, and battery modules account for the largest part of the carbon footprint of equipment production and cleaning at 36-40%.

For the interior, Polestar has used the single-material approach that was presented for the first time in the Polestar electric line concept in 2022. In this way, all layers of certain components are made from the same basic material. This allows them to be processed more efficiently and effectively by eliminating the need to separate incompatible materials.

New interior materials include woven fabric made from 100% recycled PET, bio-linked MicroTech vinyl and leather sourced from Bridge of Weir; where raw hides are products of the food industry and come from Scottish farms independently rated by the Animal Welfare Index at the highest international level.

The special, woven upholstery is made according to the new technique of the automotive industry. The fabric, which was first shown on the Precept concept car, is made from 100% recycled polyester. Polestar designers developed the material and design together with the Swedish Textile School (Borås Textilhögskolan) and further refined it with suppliers. The material is specially formulated, with less residual waste and reduced waste flow.

The interior carpet is made from recycled PET and the floor mats from ECONYL, which includes recycled fishing nets. The door trim panels of the special editions are made of NFPP (polypropylene and natural fibres), resulting in up to 50% reduction in the use of virgin plastic and up to 40% weight savings. Introduced in the Polestar 3, MicroTech is a bio-based vinyl with crude oil replaced by pine oil, and support made from recycled textiles.

Performance

The Polestar 4 is the fastest production car the brand has made to date. The sprint from 0-100 km/h can be completed in 3.8 seconds and the maximum power is 400 kW (544 hp). Electric motors have a permanent magnet and synchronous design.

The Polestar 4 will be available with two engines, or one with rear-wheel drive. Wheel sizes vary from 20 to 22 inches, depending on the version, and tires come from Pirelli and Michelin. Both long-range versions have a 100 kWh battery. The engine of the two models has a power of 400 kW (544 hp), 686 Nm of torque and a target range of up to 580 km WLTP. This version can cut off the front electric motor when not needed, to increase range and efficiency. Long-term rear-wheel drive One engine has a powerful 200 kW (272 hp) electric motor that delivers 343 Nm. This version has a target range of up to 610 km WLTP.

Both versions can charge up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC and the rear gate is motorized. The Polestar 4 has on-board hardware for two-way charging (V2L). This function will be activated later. A conventional heat pump allows the vehicle to benefit from ambient heat while preheating the interior and battery.

The twin-engine Long Range features a driver optimization feature, where the driver can choose between Range or Performance driving modes. Performance mode improves powertrain responsiveness and engages both engines at all times for optimal power delivery and performance. Range mode prioritizes efficiency, tuning the powertrain in quiet fashion and firing only the rear engine.
