News: Volvo uses biogas in a climate-free factory

Although only a small part of Volvo’s total Scope 1-3 production of 43 million tonnes, obtaining climate-neutral energy for the Taizhou plant is an important step towards the goal of having zero-climate manufacturing operations by 2025 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to reduce our global operations. . This commitment is also part of Volvo’s broader goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Like all Volvo factories around the world, the Taizhou factory already uses climate-neutral electricity, and this latest step ensures that the factory also has climate-neutral heating. It is the second car factory in the world to be climate neutral, after the Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Taizhou factory’s power supply includes electricity and heat. About 40% of electricity demand is generated by on-site solar panels, a share that will only increase in the coming years. The remaining 60 percent, which comes from the electricity grid, is also climate-neutral electricity from solar energy. Heating needs are now being met with the use of unweathered natural gas.

Volvo recently expanded its sustainability strategy with new goals for the coming years. The new target of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 builds on the previous ambition to be climate neutral by 2040. It makes clear that the first priority is to reduce net emissions before moving to decarbonisation to reduce inevitable delivery. Volvo also encourages its suppliers to do the same.
