SEOUL, April 17 (Yonhap) — HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. said on Wednesday it signed a contract worth 462.9 million dollars with Sima Peru to jointly build with a company specialized in the construction, maintenance and modernization of units of the Peruvian Navy a total of four warships by 2029.
In Lima, Joo Won-ho, head of the special ship division at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and César Benavides, CEO of Sima Peru, signed the agreement on Tuesday (Peru time) for the joint construction of warships . The signing ceremony was held in front of President Dina Boluarte, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén and Minister of Defense Walter Enrique Astudillo, on the Peruvian side, as well as the Ambassador of South Korea in Peru, Choi Jong-uk, showing Lima’s great interest in this agreement .
Under the largest contract ever signed in the history of South Korea’s defense industry with a South American country, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build the four ships, while providing equipment and supplies, as well as technology support while Sima Peru is responsible for manufacturing. A 3,400 ton escort ship, a 2,200 ton high seas patrol vessel and two 1,500 ton landing craft are planned as part of this project.
“I am very pleased with the signing of this contract to build warships together, considering the trust and friendship between the two countries and being a historic step,” said the President. A major South Korean shipbuilding company was also selected as the preferred bidder for the project to select a strategic partner for the Peruvian Navy. The latter plans to build 10 additional warships including five escort ships, three deep sea patrol boats and two landing craft.
