Bugatti’s two parallel works are a love story of creativity and passion – the Bugatti Newsroom

Every Bugatti is as unique as its owner. But for some customers the design they choose for their car is not final – tastes can change, or new ideas can spark creativity at any time. It doesn’t matter if the customer has owned the car for a day or a decade, the opportunity to fill it with a new personality always remains. And so it was with this recent Sur Mesure commission.

The story begins with two Bugatti enthusiasts, a husband and wife who have owned a number of super sports cars from Molsheim, but never from brand new. Together, they decided to celebrate their greatest passion for Bugatti by each buying a Grand Tourisme: the Chiron Super Sport. The husband’s car was released first, and having already enjoyed his Chiron Super Sport on American roads, he watched intently as his wife’s Chiron Super Sport came to life with the help of the Bugatti Sur Mesure team.

Working side by side with Jascha Straub, Chief Designer of Sur Mesure at Bugatti’s home in Molsheim his bold vision was to reimagine the design that first captivated him at its unveiling 12 years ago: the timeless Veyron L’Or Blanc. He loved the combination of deep red Rosso Efesto and bright orange Arancia Mira to create his own masterpiece hand-painted in a style that has become known as “Vagues de Lumière” for the way it mimics the glow of light. This model, as it did on the L’Or Blanc, has inspired the creativity of Bugatti owners, with each of them using their own unique spin, reinterpreting the design in personal ways.

The difficult process of creating this amazing color scheme takes weeks, starting with the creation of 2D shapes representing the lines that will be flowing over the car, which must be applied to the cars 3D surfaces with millimeter precision and recorded. Every millimeter of marked lines is carefully drawn by hand, layer upon layer, with a different color – orange in this case. If the line does not fully meet the manufacturer’s intention, the correction tape is placed over the original line until the shape is completely perfect. This process is repeated until each line has the correct flow and behavior. After completion, the paint is protected with multiple layers of clearcoat. The result of the painting consists of bright red and bright orange that appear to shine brightly, perfectly reflecting the customer’s choice of name for this car: ‘L’aura’ (‘The aura’ in English).

Jascha Straub, explained: “The effect of “Vagues de Lumière” is not new to Bugatti, but every customer has their own wishes and desires of how it should look, and every car needs a different design. Chiron Pur Game2, for example, will have different reflections for the Chiron Super Sport, so we always work from the ground up to ensure absolute perfection. The real beauty of these cars also lies in their individuality – each painter has a different style, so each car is completely unique. I saw this car for the first time recently in the hot California sun and people couldn’t believe how amazing it looked. What we created together is an inspiring sculpture.”

So inspiring, in fact, that it sparked another Sur Mesure project. While watching the design of his wife’s car change, her husband had a “Coup de Foudre” (a fitting double meaning of ‘lightning bolt’ and ‘love at first sight’ in English). He decided to modify his car to match his – an exciting new project for Bugatti’s Customer Service team.

Bugatti customers have come to expect wonder every step of the way during their journey with the brand; from customization to delivery to service, customer service reflects the same care and attention to detail that goes into the design of every Bugatti.

The Customer Service team in Molsheim, who have decades of experience in car maintenance and repair, also offer customers the opportunity to further customize or even modify their cars with a wide range of customization options and features. The interior has been redone with all-new colors and materials, new accessories have been added, and updated trim and colors are applied to the exterior. Traditionally this process is offered to Bugatti models like the old Veyron or Chiron3 models, but the service extends to almost new cars like this one.

And with that, the Chiron Super Sport was shipped from the customer’s home in Tennessee to the Customer Service workshop at Bugatti’s home in Molsheim to begin an extensive, seven-month transformation to match the customer’s desired new design.

For the Customer Service team, converting this brand new car to a visible carbon fiber finish with a 10% black tint covered with etched lines in French Racing Blue required months of preparation alone. The carbon fiber bonnet, roof, engine cover and rear wing all had to be replaced, and the original blue lines had to be completely removed from the body. A new Sky View roof was also specified, meaning the entire roof panel had to be removed from the monocoque structure. All this could only be done after each piece of the interior was removed to ensure that it would remain completely free from the fine dust created during the process. The end result should feel not just refreshed, but like a brand new car with the same level of attention to detail and quality standards applied to every car that leaves Molsheim.

The panels had to be attached to the car with millimeter precision to ensure that the visible fibers of the carbon material were perfectly aligned throughout the body. Bonding the new roof in place was a critical step – the Bugatti Customer Service team had to achieve the exact tolerances required and allow the structural attachment to fully cure.

With the body fully prepped, the striping process can begin, with unique 2D textures in French Racing Blue contrast paint applied. These cutouts are so complex that this step took one person to work on this project for four weeks, adjusting the chosen design to fit this car perfectly. Blue paint was then applied by hand over many layers to create these flowing lines and give the illusion of a sharp reflection on the black body. Although he was inspired by his wife’s car, no two cars will be exactly alike, each subtly imbued with the personality and artistic skill of the designer who created the lines and the craftsman who brought them to life. The finish is applied over the entire car with precision and attention to detail so that the lines spread across the perfectly shaped Bugatti like waves of light rays.

To match his wife’s car, the name ‘Coup de Foudre’ referring to the blue stripes painted on black carbon resembling lightning bolts in the night sky has been hand painted under the rear wing, on the door sills, and on the side of the road . center console. Bespoke door panels, and the unique “Vagues de Lumiere” inspired design were also made and installed by hand. In a nice final touch, the wheels were upgraded from the original black to a duotone hand-painted design featuring French Racing Blue.

Doing so is one of the most technically challenging projects we have ever undertaken, but experience and knowledge of the Bugatti Aftersales team is unmatched. From customization to delivery and beyond, Customer Care ensures that every step of the Bugatti customer’s journey is as unique and unparalleled as our cars.

The resulting Chiron Super Sport is a triumph of passion and innovation, bringing together the customer’s personal vision and the creativity of the Bugatti team.

For these two clients, the differences in their journeys were different. However, both reflect the elegance that runs throughout our brand, inspired rightly by our creativity and the finest creation: the timeless Veyron L’Or Blanc.”
