Stellantis Recalls 284k Dodge Chargers, Chrysler 300s For Airbag Problems

Stellantis is calling for a voluntary recall of certain 2018-2021 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300 sedans due to a problem with side airbag inflators. The automaker discovered that some modules could rupture and send projectiles into the vehicle, injuring occupants.

The recall affects 284,982 sedans, but Stellantis believes the issue is present in less than one percent of vehicles. However, it will encourage owners to fix the problem as soon as possible.

This new recall is unrelated to the previously recalled Takata airbags. These new inflators use a different composition and propellant.

The automaker has a ready-to-use recipe, and already stocks parts so dealers can service cars quickly. Technicians will replace the module with one built outside of the suspected defective period, which was from July 5, 2018 to May 19, 2021.

Stellantis began investigating the issue on February 17, 2023. By February 2024, it had become aware of five customer support records related to price boosters and, on March 7, initiated a voluntary security recall. The company said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

Moisture introduced during the manufacturing process can cause corrosion inside the spacers, causing stress cracks that can rupture during inflation. All five incidents occurred in vehicles where the interior temperature exceeded 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
