We’re still in the early days of the Tesla Cybertruck. I have seen two in the wild. The strange thing is that they were supercharging at the same Supercharger, but with different drivers/owners. For now, of course, most Cybertrucks will look the same, using a stainless steel exterior that makes the car look like it’s ready for the apocalypse. Since there are thousands and thousands on the streets, owners may want to stand out more. (After all, you’re buying a Cybertruck and it is not do you want to show up?) In fact, a higher than average percentage of trucks will be closed. But there is more that can be done besides that.

In a recent CleanTech Talk podcast discussion, KJ Gimbel, founder and CEO of Xcelerate Auto, he said something that caught my ear. He said that the changes to the Tesla Cybertruck “will go fast.”

“When you’re talking about doing actual upfitting – like, you’re doing Ladderax, tool boxes, you know anything that can be considered. for functional use – light upfits, yes; crazy, crazy things, you will see a lot. The Cybertruck specialty market will go fast.

Part of it is the car’s natural tendency to distinguish itself, and anything extra to make it better is a bonus. Part of it is the hard pull of the truck – there are so many opportunities to do things harder and harder. Then there’s the whole space, the sci-fi angle, and how many people are going to want to make it more sci-fi themed?

“I think it’s going to be similar to the Jeep Wrangler, when people started modifying their Jeeps. But there’s going to be a lot more future builds. I mean, just for guilty pleasures, we’re going to build a senior version ourselves. Obviously, Starlink will be in it. There’s CyberLandr – the company that makes lift camps, pop-up. (…) There are other companies that are out there – you know, like Lightship RV. You will see people who will want to pull their Lightship and Cybertruck. I think it’s going to go – it’s going to go fast – especially here in Texas. Texas will fly more than anyone. Our roofs are insane. I don’t know if you’ve ever driven much in Texas – I mean, the standard lifted trucks here are 6″ lift and 37s.

Keep your eyes open. Cybertrucks are already exotic, and just starting to come out of the wild, but they will only get more exotic as more people get theirs into their garages and then modify them. Stay tuned.
