Tesla’s preliminary delivery figures for Q1 2024 fell well short of projections. Analysts averaged around 457,000 vehicles estimated, but Tesla delivered just 386,810 – a decline from last year’s result of 422,875 for the same quarter.

Total production was also down from 440,808 in 2023 to 433,371 currently. However, the unsold vehicle margin grew significantly from around 18,000 last year to 46,561 this quarter.

Tesla attributed the slump to multiple challenges. Shutdowns at some overseas factories disrupted volume. Additionally, the production ramp for the newly updated Model 3 at Fremont created inefficiencies.

This Model 3 rollout issue was likely a major factor, as combined Model 3/Y sales decreased significantly more sharply than other models on a percentage basis.

Investors will be watching closely for further details and financial reporting. Tesla has stated fuller Q1 2024 results will be revealed after the market closes this coming Tuesday, April 23. Only then will clarity emerge on whether disruptions were one-time or signify deeper demand changes for the electric vehicle leader.
