It’s a banner year for the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. The midsize truck was selected as MotorTrend Truck of the Year and was a finalist for North American Truck of the Year. It has also won a number of other awards. Recently, the Rocky Mountain Automotive Journalists association selected the Colorado 2024 as the Rocky Mountain Truck of the Year.

RMAP President Matt Pilgrim said “The Chevrolet Colorado offers a complete package for the unique needs of our region. The turbocharged engine is perfect for our oxygen-poor air while its wide belt makes it easy to climb long highway stretches, even when towing or carrying a load of gear. Inside, the cabin offers a contemporary fusion with clean lines for a professional and sophisticated experience. Especially with the return of the ZR2 Bison Edition, the Colorado is equipped to meet the needs of both, commuters and commuters alike.

The Colorado beat out the GMC Canyon and Ford F150 for top honors. RMAP members (including myself) judged the cars based on

  • powertrain and chassis
  • performance
  • total value
  • car design
  • Engineering

When the Colorado was chosen as MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year, the editors had something to say. “The Colorado lineup’s on- and off-road performance, especially the ZR2’s prowess, is nothing short of exceptional, rivaling even some of the most respected off-road vehicles available,” said Ed Loh, editor-in-chief of MotorTrend Group. “Receiving the MotorTrend Truck of the Year Award is a testament to Colorado’s excellence in a variety of areas and utility needs.”

The truck has many features found in larger, more luxurious trucks but not found in the mid-size segment. Its two new features are clearly visible in how much they will help new owners.

2024 Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss Tailgate First Tailgate Part Innovation

From the moment I saw it, I loved it and I think drivers will love it too. The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado has a storage box built into the tailgate. With the tailgate down, a lockable hatch opens to a 45-inch-wide, 4-inch-deep storage compartment and drain. The rear hatch also offers two cup holders and a measuring instrument built into the face. It can be used to hold tools, or it can even be a cooler. A tailgate comes standard on the ZR2 model of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado but is available as an option on all others. The tailgate can also be opened half way, enabling the storage of long items. The tailgate will accommodate up to 500 pounds when opened at that 45-degree angle. Drivers can also purchase an option to lock and unlock the tailgate remotely.

Truck Bed Upgrades

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado has also made many improvements to the truck bed. It has eight standard fixed coils and room for up to nine additional coils, combining for 17 class-leading levels available.

The Colorado has four peg pockets over the bed, as well as six 2 x 6 inch bed pockets and four 2 x 8 inch bed pockets. There are two motorcycle/bicycle tire ditches on the front bed wall.

Buyers can also opt for a 110-volt power outlet located in the truck bed.

Class-Leading Camera Views

Another feature that I believe Chevrolet Colorado 2024 drivers will like is the low-profile camera that is available on the Z71 and ZR2 models.

The new Chevrolet Colorado has more camera features than any other midsize pickup, but the real game changer will be the available underbody camera. True off-roaders will want to know what hit the bottom of their car, or in the worst case scenario, what they might get stuck on.

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado will offer up to ten different camera views. Drivers can easily check all camera views through the infotainment screen. Dash cams are typically found on luxury or full-size trucks, such as the 2023 GMC HUMMER EV.

Some of the Colorado’s other cameras are integral to the new recovery technology that debuted on the Chevrolet Silverado. Hitch Guidance is now standard, while Hitch View and Chevy’s Trailering App are new for 2024. Hitch Guidance has guidance to help plan the trailer and truck hitch, and Hitch View provides a zoom-in view of the hitch to help plan.

As I’ve reported before, the Bison Edition of the ZR2 is pretty tough. “The 2024 Colorado Buffalo ZR2 looks sharper because it is. It has a factory-installed 4.5-inch lift and the chassis is wider than the regular ZR2. It rides on massive 35-inch OD/Terrain tires, the largest in their class The Bison has a standard 2.7L Turbo I-4 powertrain with 430 lb.-ft. of torque and a maximum payload of 5,500 lbs were tested on the racetrack by off-road champion Chad Hall. The truck was also put to the test on the Rubicon Trail.

Rocky Mountain Vehicle of the Year Awards

2024 is the eighteenth annual Rocky Mountain Vehicle of the Year award. The goal is to identify 2023 and 2024 models (an extension due to production challenges caused by the pandemic) that are new or significantly modified.
