The next Toyota Tacoma has been revealed in patent images

  • The new Tacoma will be almost identical to the Tacoma EV concept and will look like the current Tundra.

  • A hybrid mechanic should be offered as a more powerful option.

  • These images show that the launch of the next Tacoma could take place this year.

Toyota has been working on a new generation of the mid-size Tacoma for some time now and new patent images show what to expect from its design.

The current version of the Tacoma was introduced for the 2016 model year, making it one of the oldest models in its class.

To remedy that, the next Tacoma will feature an all-new design that draws heavily from the full-size Tundra.

Patent images from Brazil (INPI) have leaked and show exactly what to expect from the Tacoma when it comes to styling.

The truck will share many of its styling cues with the Tundra, including the shape of its headlights and taillights, as well as the style of its grille. The Tacoma’s flared wheel arches will however be more prominent than the Tundra’s.

It’s also not the first time we’ve seen this design on a small truck as Toyota introduced the Tacoma EV concept among many other electric vehicle concepts in late 2021.

Comparing the concept and the patent images, the only element that clearly seems to have been modified is the grille, which has not been filled in anymore to allow cooling of the engine that will be behind it.

Speaking of which, the entry-level Tacoma is rumored to share its 2.4-liter four-cylinder powertrain with the Highlander, developing 265 horsepower and 310 torque.

A different stroke can be used to produce more horsepower or torque, perhaps bringing its output closer to the 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque it produces when installed in the new Lexus RX.

Instead of the current V6 engine, the Tacoma is likely to offer a Hybrid Max powertrain that could use the same gasoline engine as well as electric motors, as in the Toyota Crown. In the truck, this powertrain can produce up to 366 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.

These two powerplants are more powerful than the current version, as the 3.5-liter V6 used in the 2023 Tacoma can only develop 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

Given the new truck’s strong similarities to the Tacoma EV concept, Toyota may also be planning an all-electric version to be added later.

No launch date has been announced for the next Tacoma, but since a design patent was filed yesterday, it could be a few more months before the public sees new images.
