For the first time in the history of the car, a pure electric car leads the world ranking of best-selling cars. It happened in the first quarter of 2023 and, of course, it can only be Tesla. In particular, the Tesla Model Y which, according to data processed by Jato Dynamics, including 53 markets and official forecasts for 31 others, sold 267,200 units worldwide between January and March. An increase of almost 69% compared to the same period in 2022 and achieved better results in China, its main market, in the United States, and an increase of 68%, and in Europe, where it has been the best-selling car.
The success is certainly due to the price cut decided at the beginning of the year by the owner of Tesla Elon Musk, but which is also no stranger to two types of cars, SUVs and electric ones, which the Model Y belongs to.
The goal of achieving Y’s world record in the first quarter of the year had already been announced by Musk at the annual meeting of shareholders in August 2022. But then not many would bet. For the entire year 2022, Tesla Model Y has become the third best-selling car in the world with 747,500 units, behind Toyota Corolla and Toyota Rav4. However, the Japanese company can also “comfort” itself in the first quarter of 2023 because it has four cars in the first five positions.
