Truck fire shuts major Maryland highway weeks after deadly tanker fire in the region

A major Maryland highway was shuttered Thursday morning after a truck caught fire, weeks after a deadly tanker fire in the region.

Traffic along I-95 near the Maryland-Delaware border was halted for several hours after a tractor-trailer ignited, according to Maryland State Police. The fire was reported shortly before 10 a.m. and was extinguished by 11:10 a.m.

The highway closure caused extensive delays, with some drivers reporting wait times of up to three hours. No injuries were reported in connection with the truck fire.

The incident occurred just weeks after a tanker truck carrying 8,600 gallons of fuel erupted into flames on I-95 in Cecil County, Md., causing the death of the driver. That fire caused extensive damage to the highway, with an estimated repair cost of $2.5 million.

“We are grateful that there were no injuries reported in connection with today’s truck fire,” Maryland State Police said in a statement. “We understand the impact of highway closures on travelers, and we are doing our best to restore traffic safety as quickly as possible.”

The incident is currently under investigation.
