Manchester United got a big pass in their first Premier League game after the World Cup. Coach Erik ten Hag’s formation beat low-flyers Nottingham Forest 3-0.
Ten Hag, who took over for his club next to PSV player Cody Gakpo, started with World Cup finalist Raphaël Varane, among others, but Lisandro Martínez was still unavailable after the celebrations in Argentina.
Malacia hits the post
Tyrell Malacia was also on the debut and almost scored after six minutes. Through Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, the bet from the Orange international ended up on the post.
United, number five in England, still took the lead at a wet Old Trafford pitch. The corner difference was completed by Marcus Rashford. Anthony Martial doubled the margin shortly after from the switch.
Shortly before the break, the visitors saw a goal disallowed after Willy Boly was offside. Shortly after the break, former Ajax player Antony met Hennessey on behalf of the home team.
Ten Hag took Antony and Martial aside after more than an hour of play. One of their substitutes, Donny van de Beek, was very active, but another substitute, Fred, scored the final goal to make it 3-0.
Keep four within reach
The victory makes Manchester United fifth in the Premier League. However, they are now two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. That place gives you the right to participate in the Champions League after the season.
On New Year’s Eve, Manchester United will meet another bottom player, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Chelsea wins again
Chelsea registered another victory in the Premier League for the first time since October 16. After two draws and three defeats in a row, the Londoners improved against Bournemouth: 2-0.
The team of coach Graham Potter, the successor of Thomas Tuchel, who was fired in September, lost respectively to Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal and Newcastle United shortly before the World Cup in Qatar and thus ended in crisis.
Ninth place caused grief, but Chelsea had no trouble against Bournemouth. Kai Havertz and Mason Mount made the difference in a lopsided battle before the break.
Shortly after the break, right back Reece James fell off. He missed the World Cup with a knee injury and made his comeback against Bournemouth. James was having joint pain again. The severity of his new injury is still unclear.
A much-improved Chelsea had more chances for the rest of the game, but Denis Zakaria, Havertz, Mount and Kalidou Koulibaly couldn’t get the ball past Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers.
As a result of the 2-0 victory, Chelsea, without World Cup player Hakim Ziyech, moved up one place. On New Year’s Day, the Potter formation will visit Nottingham Forest. Four days later, the match with Manchester City follows.
