An officer of the University of Pennsylvania was critically injured when a vehicle struck him in a hit-and-run incident in West Philadelphia on Saturday, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of 40th and Larchwood streets, when the officer was crossing the street. The vehicle, described as a silver sedan, struck the officer and fled the scene.
The officer, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is being treated for critical injuries.
The Philadelphia Police Department is actively investigating the incident and is asking anyone with information regarding the identity of the driver or the whereabouts of the vehicle to contact the department.
The University of Pennsylvania released a statement on Sunday expressing its concern for the officer and thanking the Philadelphia Police Department for its swift response.
“We are deeply concerned for the officer who remains in critical condition,” the statement said. “We are grateful for the swift response of the Philadelphia Police Department and are hopeful for a full recovery.”
