The University of Virginia (UVA) Women’s Swimming & Diving Team captured their third consecutive NCAA title, with a victory at the 2021 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Cavaliers, led by decorated head coach Todd DeSorbo, demonstrated their prowess in the pool with a resilient performance over the four-day competition, accumulating a total of 518 points. UVA’s total outperformed runner-up Stanford University (475 points) and third-place finisher University of California, Berkeley (368.5 points).
The Cavaliers were propelled to victory by a host of remarkable performances. Junior Paige Madden earned a pair of individual titles in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.90) and the 400-yard individual medley (3:59.37). Moreover, freshman Kate Douglass etched her name in Cavalier history with her incredible performance in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 46.46 seconds to break the NCAA Record. Douglass also earned a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:03.14.
The Women’s Swimming & Diving Team also excelled in the relay events, securing a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Notably, UVA’s 400-yard medley relay team of Douglass, Maddie Donohoe, Emily Hetzer, and Ella Nelson broke the NCAA record with a time of 3:20.60.
The Cavaliers’ impressive performance was further highlighted by the individual success of Maddie Donohoe, who earned two top-three finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.17) and 200-yard backstroke (1:51.04).
UVA’s third consecutive championship crown serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence, as well as Coach DeSorbo’s leadership. With the 2021 title in their possession, the Cavaliers have now won seven NCAA titles in the program’s 18-year history.
