In Shanghai, Volvo wants to build “one of the most comprehensive automotive brand design studios in the world on the mainland”. The new location should be able to map the entire process from vehicle design to production.

On site, among other things, the production is more true to scale According to the automaker, models of the interior, exterior, colors and materials as well as UX design are possible. In addition to the necessary milling machines, 3D printers and workshops, the subject of Virtual Reality should also play a central role. In total, more than 100 designers will be active on approximately 5,500 square meters.

“Our design team in Shanghai is an integral and integrated part of our global network”says Jeremy Offer, head of global innovation at Volvo Cars. “The new premises and state-of-the-art technology help strengthen the collaboration between our three design studios and take Scandinavian Volvo design to the next level.”

In China, Volvo already operates a research and development center in Shanghai and plants in Chengdu, Daqing and Taizhou. The design team in Shanghai has been working for the manufacturer since 2010. One of the first projects in which creative minds played a leading role is the Volvo EX90 Excellence.
