What do you think of Alfa Romeo Milano’s greatest architecture?

An Alfa Romeo with an electric drivetrain, fans of the Busso-V6 will find it a little disgusting. But if you want this great brand to continue to exist, it will have to move with the times – and therefore build crossovers and plugs. And so the money comes to build things like the 33 Stradale. But there is one old tradition that Alfa Romeo did not have to abandon the Milano.

The Alfa Romeo Milano is in any case a major break in style compared to the rest of the current range. Logically, because Alfa Romeo’s new design language begins in Milano. Future Alfas will also look like this. But thanks to the new design language, Alfa seems to be saying goodbye to an important design element, and that’s a bit of a shame.

Alfa Romeo Milano license plate is in the middle

Since the late 1990s, the designers at Alfa Romeo have faithfully stuck to one tradition. When signing a new car, they always forget to make room for the license plate holder. They always put the number plate on the left side of the nose afterwards. This was the case with the Alfa 156, Mito, Giulietta and even the recent Tonale.

Certainly not everyone can appreciate this asymmetrical approach, but it is true Alfa Romeo. Now Alfa Romeo Milano even has a very small space to hang the license plate on the left side of the bumper. The designers have done their best to give the Milano its identity, but they haven’t done one thing in particular that would set this Alfa apart.

This is the first Alfa Romeo under the new parent company

In 2019, parent companies Peugeot and Alfa Romeo merged to form Stellantis. The Tonale is the last car that Alfa made completely in-house and this Milano was built with Stellantis technology. Under the skin is almost the same car as Peugeot e-2008 or Opel Mokka. It is clear that a new era has begun. New technology and new design language.

We realize that the new phone number space will be a relief for many people. These people will say that Alfas have looked good in recent years despite the wrong license plate, not because of it. But still: it’s the imperfections that make something perfect – and we think it’s a bit of a shame that this tradition seems to be dying.
