Electric Mini Aceman (2024) is interesting, but not with its range

In the summer of 2022 we were first introduced to the Mini Aceman as a research model. Now, nearly two years later, the compact SUV is making its debut. The electric successor to the Mini Clubman still looks remarkably similar to the concept car. The range is disappointing, but the price isn’t too bad.

Of Mini The Aceman was launched at the Shanghai Auto Show. That’s not surprising, because it will be built in China in the coming years. From 2026, production of European Acemans will move to a plant in Oxford, Mini’s home city. The Mini Aceman is expected in the showroom at the end of this year and will replace the Mini Clubman, which went into production in February 2024. The starting price is 38,990 euros. This makes it 3,000 euros more expensive than the Mini E.

There are no opening doors, but a back door

Mini has come up with a new design language, which they… modesty of personality call. Very few, not the excess of chrome toys for which the German-English brand is now known.

Aceman still looks perfectly fine research example presented in 2022. Some design details such as the headlights, windshields and exterior mirrors have been cleverly modified, while the edges of the specially designed wheel arches have been retained. Unfortunately, the roof luggage rack in the shape of the Union Jack flag did not reach the production stage.

As a small SUV, the Mini Aceman is more practical than the regular Mini E. With its length of 4.07 meters, it has a height of 22 centimeters. The luggage compartment offers space for 300 to 1005 liters. The three-part folding rear seat provides more practical convenience. Unfortunately, the Aceman has a normal tail, and no longer the funny opening doors that the Clubman had.

If you look very (very) closely, the Mini has hidden a memory of the original Mini from 1957 in the Aceman design. It had a visible weld seam under the A-pillars. On the Aceman you will see a diagonal line in that spot. There are four equipment levels, from the base Classic version to the sporty JCW trim.

Mini Aceman interior

Inside, the round touch screen is so attractive that the lack of instruments is not noticeable. Below the large screen we find the most obvious reference to the original Mini, in the form of five toggle switches. The most important driving functions (parking brake, gear selection, start/stop, Experience Modes, audio volume) are available through these switches.

Junior designer Olivier Heimler also reveals some of the tricks he put into the Aceman. For example, you can replace the scrolling arrow with a small Mini and the rotating LP of the song you are playing can be displayed on the central screen on all sides.

Dog and gadget haters will have to get used to Spike, the British digital dog who will faithfully help you on the road. The Chinese really like those kinds of jokes.

A subspecies of Aceman

Unlike the usual ones Mini, the only electric version of the Aceman is on the market. Soon you’ll be able to choose from two flavors, with specs that won’t leave an EV driver cold or hot. Range is 310 km (Aceman E) or 402 km (Aceman SE). Even with a maximum charging capacity of 75 kW (Aceman E) or 95 kW (Aceman SE), the bulldog Spike will not wag its digital tail happily. 100 to 150 kW is common these days.
