Still no Jacques Villeneuve at the start – breaks with Vanwall and ByKolles

Along with the Monaco Grand Prix (Formula 1) and the Indy 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans forms the Triple Crown of motorsport. In all those years, only Graham Hill – Damon Hill’s father – managed to win all three races and claim the unofficial title.

Graham Hill completed his Triple Crown in 1972 by winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, having already won the 1966 Indianapolis 500. He was also master of the streets of Monte Carlo, as he won the Monaco Grand Prix no less than five times; in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968 and 1969. To top it all off, he can call himself twice (1962 and 1968) Formula 1 world champion.

Ferrari is qualifying well, Toyota is dominating the race

Also in 2023 no one will manage to win the Triple Crown, which Fernando Alonso came close to in modern times, but that does not make the 24 Hours of Le Mans any less interesting. On the contrary! Thanks to the introduction of a new car, the hypercar, the starting field in the first class is stronger and more complete than before.

However, the competition has not yet reached Toyota’s level in the first season of the new era, so the Japanese are determined to strike as usual and win the 24-hour race for the sixth time in a row. The big question at the moment seems to be whether the #7 or #8 car will win the race, but don’t underestimate the Ferraris. At the beginning of this season, it has already managed the fastest time in various characteristics. It works a little better in racing.

Catsburg contender in Corvette

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are scheduled for free practice, qualifying and Hyperpole, followed by warm-up on Saturday morning. The weather forecast for the weekend of June 10 and 11 also seems to be changing, so 2023 could be a good edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including the required rain. And keep an eye on Nicky Catsburg in his Corvette as he is one of the contenders to beat in the GTE Am division.
