400 Posts Remain Free in GMC Kathua, Reveals RTI


SRINAGAR: About 400 posts, including gazetted and non-government posts, are still vacant in the Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua.

According to the news, in the last five years, GMC Kathua has performed more than 40,000 surgeries, and about 1800 deaths were reported. These figures were revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) filing by RTI activist MM Shuja.

Among the 267 gazetted posts approved for GMC Kathua, 154 are currently filled, leaving 113 vacant. Similarly, of the 433 positions that have not been announced in the government gazette, 206 have been filled while 227 have not been filled.

Out of 116 Class IV posts, 78 have been filled, and 38 remain vacant. In total, out of 816 approved positions, 438 are occupied, and 378 are vacant.

Over the past five years, the hospital has recorded a total of 1791 deaths, with the following breakdown: 47 in 2019-20, 256 in 2020-21, 577 in 2021-22, 529 in 2022-23, and 382 in 2023-24. , about 80% of the inpatient cases were handled under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

Meanwhile, the hospital has performed 16,003 major surgeries over the past five years. These include 2,768 in 2019-20, 3,272 in 2020-21, 3,661 in 2021-22, 3,426 in 2022-23, and 2,876 in 2023-24.

A total of 26,150 minor surgeries were performed during this period, with 3,714 in 2019-20, 2,491 in 2020-21, 6,139 in 2021-22, 7,844 in 2022-23, and 5,962 (2032-24) 24.
