Swiss police officers don’t care if you drive an economy hatchback or an expensive exotic

Most limited edition cars are usually considered garage queens, but exceptions do exist, such as the Pagani Huayra Codalunga shown here, seen cruising on public roads in Switzerland. As if driving a long-tailed Huayra in the wild wasn’t fun enough, its owner was stopped by local police, who reportedly impounded the $7.3 million Italian exotic.

The exact circumstances of the incident are unclear, but a short video circulating on social media shows two uniformed Swiss police officers inspecting the Pagani and talking to the owner about paperwork. The car was parked on the side of a mountain road, accompanied by a Ferrari Testarossa carrying skis on its roof. Following a brief stop, Codalunga is caught driving, escorted by a silver Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, which may be from a police cruiser.

The photo is from a car photographer Freddie Atkins who appeared at the scene. One of the officers asked him not to take any pictures, but he was already taking a video which he later uploaded to his Instagram profile.

In the absence of an official explanation, commentators speculated on the reasons for the police stop and the alleged seizure of a large vehicle. Some suggested that the Huayra Codalunga’s front license plate may not have been large enough or visible enough to comply with local regulations. Others said the Pagans did not have tires suitable for snow conditions and did not have snow chains, which would violate regulations in the area.

Another possible reason could be a speeding offence, as the Swiss police are known for their strict enforcement of speed limits. According to local authorities, “excessive running can result in heavy fines and prison terms ranging from one to four years.”

The Pagani Huayra Codalunga is a special edition of the Italian hypercar that debuted in 2022 with a super long tail design and a limited production of five units. The model pictured may be the first model produced and comes with Italian license plates. The Codalunga is powered by an AMG-derived V12 engine producing 840 hp (626 kW / 851 PS) and 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft) of torque, sending power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed Xtrac automatic gearbox.
