Kia to add 9 new hybrids to its lineup by 2028 – News & Highlights

In the coming years, to compensate for the slow global distribution of 100% electric vehicles, Kia will add another 9 hybrid models based on new generation Ice engines. Ho Sung Song, president and CEO of the South Korean company, said this during a meeting with investors.
“Following the successful launch of the brand in 2021 – said Ho Sung Song, confirming the goal of 1.6 million electric vehicles per year by 2030 – Kia is strengthening its global strategy to promote the development of a range of innovative electric vehicles and thus accelerate the transition of the company to become a provider of sustainable mobility solutions.”
But in order to ensure “competition in terms of cost and flexibility of production” – emphasized the president of Kia – in front of the market of electric models which “is decreasing due to the economic recession, the reduction of subsidies and the lack of payment infrastructure”, the company is committed to develop a new generation of hybrid trains with “higher power and fuel efficiency.”
A strategy aimed at “transforming” Kia’s product offering, through two versions of this new engine. One for “subcompact and midsize” cars and the other for larger models. Kia, it was noted, will build new hybrid powerplants alongside existing combustion engines.
Also in order to cope with the expected increase in sales of cars with electric Ice engines, Kia will launch nine new hybrids by 2028 that will be used – said Ho Sung Song – “in many major highways of the world”, but without specifying which cars they will be. those affected.
Based on this new strategy, Kia expects hybrids to make up 20% of its global sales in 2030, from the 14% previously estimated at the beginning of 2024. The percentage of sales of electric models – Autocar highlights in reporting the news – will however increase from 10% to 38% during that period.
Overall, Kia estimates that electric vehicles will account for 58% – or about 2.48 million units – of Kia’s global sales by 2030, with significant differences across regions. If in the United States and Canada the forecast is for 35% of sales in 2030 to create hybrid models, in the European Union this figure will be 12%.
